Rest well at your hotel tonight, preparing for tomorrow's underground lava cave adventure.
This morning, you'll have the thrilling chance to actually walk inside an extinct Icelandic volcano, experiencing the underground world created by ancient eruptions. Stand inside Raufarhólshellir cave, a hollow tube in the rock where lava would once have been rushing by with tremendous force thousands of years ago. As you walk through the widest lava cave in Iceland with your guide, you'll notice colorful rock formations in the walls left behind by the eruption approximately 5,200 years ago. Minerals have painted the cave walls in reds, yellows, and greens. Your guide will explain how lava tubes form and point out interesting geological features throughout the tunnel. The cave extends deep underground, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.
In the afternoon, you'll return to Reykjavík and have time to continue exploring the city at your leisure. Why not unwind with a warming coffee and slice of delicious cake at a cozy cafe after your chilly underground expedition? Browse more shops or visit additional museums before preparing for tonight's adventure.
This evening, you'll set out on your first Northern Lights hunt, chasing the elusive aurora borealis away from city lights. Your expert guide will take you to the best viewing locations based on weather and solar activity forecasts, maximizing your chances of witnessing this magical natural phenomenon dancing across the Arctic sky.
Hop into your super jeep in Reykjavík for an adventure-filled day! First, your expert driver-guide will take you to Þingvellir National Park, the historic site of Iceland's Viking-age parliament that met here for nearly 900 years. It's also the dramatic location where the European and North American tectonic plates are visibly drifting apart, creating a rift valley you can walk through. Then you'll head to the Geysir geothermal area, where the famous Strokkur geyser erupts approximately 25 meters into the air with remarkable regularity. Here you can also see other geothermal formations like bubbling hot springs creating colorful displays and steaming mud pots. Your guide will explain the volcanic forces at work.
Next, you'll round out the Golden Circle section of today's tour by stopping at Gullfoss, one of Iceland's most spectacular waterfalls, where glacial water plunges dramatically into a rugged canyon. In winter, ice formations may frame the falls beautifully. Now you've whetted your appetite for adventure, you'll head up onto Langjökull glacier with your driver-guide. Your super jeep will navigate the icy terrain with ease, accessing areas regular vehicles cannot reach! Once you reach base camp on the glacier, you'll jump onto your two-person snowmobile. Spend one hour exploring this mind-blowing glacial landscape, racing across pristine ice and snow. Return to Reykjavík this evening.
After two action-packed adventure days, today is all about rest and rejuvenation. Have a leisurely breakfast in Reykjavík, perhaps sleeping in a bit after your exciting exploits. You'll be picked up mid-morning for your retreat at the Blue Lagoon spa, Iceland's most iconic wellness destination.
The Blue Lagoon is Iceland's oldest and most famous geothermal spa, tracing its history back to the first public bathing facilities in the area established in 1987. The lagoon's milky-blue waters are rich in silica, a mineral that nourishes your skin and creates the distinctive color. Included with your Comfort admission is a towel, silica mud mask known for its skin benefits, and a drink of your choice from the in-lagoon bar. Slip into the silky warm waters and spend hours recharging, moving between different areas of the lagoon and applying your mud mask. The contrast of warm water and cool air creates magical steam. The surrounding lava fields create a dramatic backdrop. It's also a perfect place to capture uniquely Icelandic photos! Return to Reykjavík this evening, feeling completely refreshed and ready for tomorrow's ice cave expedition.
On your final full day, you'll jump into a super jeep and head to Mýrdalsjökull glacier for your second glacier adventure. There you'll actually venture under the glacier surface, equipped with crampons and helmet and led by your experienced guide who ensures safety while maximizing the experience. Kötlujökull, an outlet glacier flowing from the larger Mýrdalsjökull, creates some of the most spectacular ice caves in Iceland.
You'll walk inside these awesome frozen formations, surrounded by walls of ice displaying mesmerizing blue, white, and black layers. The black stripes are volcanic ash from Katla volcano beneath the glacier, creating natural artwork. The cave glows with ethereal blue light filtering through the ice. You'll also stop at the jaw-dropping Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can walk behind the falling water if conditions permit. If you're traveling between 1 February and 15 November, you'll also visit Skógafoss just down the road, one of Iceland's tallest and most powerful waterfalls. Return to your Reykjavík hotel this evening for your final night, perhaps celebrating your incredible journey with dinner at a special restaurant.
